Washing an electric car: what is actually different

The fear, retired

The worry is understandable, water and electricity being famous enemies, but an EV's battery and drivetrain are sealed to standards a wash never approaches; these are cars rated to drive through flooded streets. Manufacturers permit normal washing without ceremony. The one universal rule is unplugging before you wash, which is less about danger and more about not soaking a live connector's seals for no reason.

What actually differs

A few pleasant things. Regenerative braking means EV wheels shed far less brake dust, so they stay presentable longer and clean up faster. There is no exhaust tip to polish and no tailpipe soot line on the rear bumper. Charge-port lids appreciate a proper dry and an occasional check that the seal sits clean, the same courtesy a fuel filler flap gets. And frunks collect crumbs exactly like any other boot, whatever their owners believe.

The soft paint issue nobody mentions in the showroom

Several volume EV brands ship notably soft clear coat, which swirls if washed carelessly. The safe method is the same one that protects any good paint, plenty of lubrication, clean mitts, no drive-through brushes ever, but the margin for error is thinner, and the case for ceramic protection is correspondingly stronger; a hard sacrificial layer over soft paint is the best money an EV keeper can spend on the body.

Why kerbside suits an EV

An EV parked at a lamp-post charger is exactly where a wash that comes to the car earns its keep: it never needs to leave the charger, and the wash arrives with its own water and power on a zero-emission bike, which suits the reason most people bought the car in the first place.
