How Yikes came up the A1

Yikes started in north London in 2023 and has cleaned more than 15,000 cars across the capital since. Hertfordshire is too far for our own team to reach every day, so we have done it the way the best local services do: with local people. Washes here are done by vetted local washers from the Yikes Network, independent valeters who already work Stevenage and the towns around it, and who have passed our checks.

What you see is unchanged: one booking page, London prices, a card payment held by Yikes, a washer who checks in at the car and photographs it before and after, and a wash report by text with your receipt and a link to rate the job or book the next one. What is different is who turns up: someone who lives round the corner rather than someone who has driven up from Archway. If anything is not right, Yikes sorts it.

Driving in Hertfordshire, the short version

A few things every Hertfordshire driver deals with, and how a wash that comes to you fits round them.

  • Gritting started on 1 October. Hertfordshire County Council treats about 1,500 miles of priority road in typical icy weather: every A and B road, the routes to hospitals, stations and the airport, the bus routes and one road into every village of fifty houses or more, plus any hill of 10 percent or steeper. Everything else is salted only in sustained ice or snow, which means the salt on your close is what the main road sprayed in.
  • The A1(M) has bypassed Stevenage since the early 1960s, and the M1, the M25 and the A10 carry the rest of the county's commute. Motorway film and brake dust are the daily deposit on anything that uses them.
  • Luton Airport was approved for expansion in April 2025, from 18 million passengers a year to 32 million by the mid 2040s, with a second terminal and an extended DART link. More traffic on the M1 and the A505 for a long time.
  • The trees. Stevenage alone has avenues of Norway maple and two ancient woods, and the Chilterns and the Lea Valley are no different: sap from June, leaves from October, droppings all year.

Left alone, salt dulls the clear coat, sap and droppings etch it and leaves hold damp against it. Booking an outside wash every few weeks from October to March is the cheapest way to stop all three, and for a car under three years old a ceramic coating does the job for two years at a time.

How it works

How a wash works in Hertfordshire

  1. Book onlinePick your clean and a two-hour arrival window between 10am and 6pm, up to four weeks ahead. Same prices as the rest of London.
  2. A local washer takes itA vetted washer from the Yikes Network who works your patch. They bring water, power and kit, and sort their own parking.
  3. Before and after photosYour washer checks in at the car and photographs it before and after, so you have a record without being there.
  4. Your wash reportA text the moment it is done, with the photos, your receipt and a link to rate the wash or book the next one.

Local life

Hertfordshire, at its best

Every Stevenage page has its own local life section. Here are a few favourites from across the county.

The first New Town

Stevenage was designated on 1 August 1946, Britain's first, after a meeting at which Lewis Silkin told a crowd of 3,000 that it was no good jeering, it was going to be done. The town turns 80 in 2026 with a year of events.

The first garden city

Letchworth Garden City began in 1903 when First Garden City Limited, formed by Ebenezer Howard's supporters, bought 3,818 acres for £155,587. Sollershott Circus, built about 1909, is Britain's first roundabout.

Knebworth House

The Lytton family home since 1490, rebuilt in Tudor Gothic in the 1840s, and the venue of the Knebworth Festival since 1974. Oasis have announced a return for their Live '27 tour, with grandstand seating for the first time.

The East Coast Main Line

Stevenage station, 27.6 miles from King's Cross, opened in 1973 when the town moved its station south to meet the new centre. LNER runs through to York, Leeds and Edinburgh; Thameslink runs to Brighton and Gatwick.

Gunnels Wood

Stevenage's industrial area between the railway and the A1 is home to GSK's global research hub, Airbus Defence and Space, which built the Rosalind Franklin rover and the Solar Orbiter, and the Bioscience Catalyst science park.

Luton Airport

The UK's fifth busiest airport, with 16.9 million passengers in 2024, now approved to grow to 32 million. Its DART rail link from Luton Airport Parkway is being extended as part of the plan.

Who lives here, and the clean that suits

Stevenage, our home authority in the county, had 89,495 people in 36,510 households at the 2021 Census, 80 percent of them with a car and 38 percent with two or more. The towns around it range from the terraces and garage courts of the New Town to the drives of Harpenden and Knebworth and the flats of Hatfield and Luton, but the common thread across Hertfordshire is the commute: to London by train, to the M25 and the M1 by car, and to the airport. The car here works for its living, and it shows.

  • The car that sits at the station all week: an Essential Exterior at the weekend takes off a week of film and salt.
  • Households with two cars, which is most of Harpenden and Knebworth: add both to one booking and they are done in one visit.
  • Muddy footwells after the Chilterns or the Lea Valley: Deluxe Inside & Out.
  • A car still under warranty: a ceramic coating keeps the paint as it left the showroom.
  • Company vans: priced on the booking page by size, or see the fleet page for several at once.

Hertfordshire after 2028

On 16 July 2026 the Government announced that Hertfordshire's county council and ten district councils will be replaced by four unitary councils on 1 April 2028, with elections in May 2027: Central Hertfordshire for Stevenage, most of North Herts and most of Welwyn Hatfield; North West Hertfordshire for Dacorum and St Albans; South West Hertfordshire for Hertsmere, Three Rivers and Watford; and an eastern council that includes East Herts and Broxbourne. Parking, permits and gritting all change hands. Your wash does not: it is booked with Yikes and done by the same local washer, whoever runs the town hall.

What's happening across Hertfordshire

Updated 25 October 2026

  • British Summer Time ended on Sunday 25 October. Daylight now runs out before 5pm, so the 2pm window is the last one that finishes an outside wash in the light. (GOV.UK: when the clocks change)
  • Hertfordshire's winter service has been running since 1 October, with gritters on standby around the clock for about 1,500 miles of priority road. Road salt dulls paint if it is left on for weeks. (Hertfordshire County Council: winter service launches)
  • Stevenage 80 continues through the autumn: the New Town lights go on at the Island on 21 November and the Old Town lights at the Bowling Green on 28 November. (Stevenage Borough Council: Stevenage 80)

Hertfordshire questions

Good to know

Do you cover my postcode?
If it starts SG1 to SG18, AL1 to AL10, HP1 to HP4, EN6 to EN11, CM16 to CM23 or LU1 to LU6, yes. Use the postcode finder on this page, or put your postcode into the booking page to see the windows available. Watford and Bushey are on our West London page.
Is there a travel charge for Hertfordshire?
No. You pay London prices and nothing for the distance, because the washer is already local. Members Club savings apply here as they do everywhere.
Do you cover Hitchin, Letchworth, Welwyn, Hertford, St Albans and Luton?
Yes. None of them has a page of its own yet, but any postcode in the finder above goes through the booking page and a Network washer who covers that town takes the job. We add a town page when a washer joins there.
Can you wash the car at a station car park?
Only on your own drive or a street where the car is legally parked. Station car parks are private land with their own rules, so we wash the commuter car at home, at the weekend or in the evening.
How often should a Hertfordshire commuter car be washed?
Every three to four weeks from October to March, when salt is on the roads, and every four to six weeks the rest of the year. Members Club makes that routine cheaper.
Do you need my water or electricity?
No. Your washer brings water, power and all the kit, so there is nothing to connect or set up. A flat, a terrace, a drive or a village street all work.
Do I need to be in?
Not for an outside only wash, as long as the car is where you said it would be and the washer can reach it. For anything that includes the inside, someone needs to unlock the car.
Who will wash my car?
In Hertfordshire your wash is done by a vetted local washer from the Yikes Network. You book and pay through Yikes at the usual prices, the washer checks in at the car and takes before and after photos, and your receipt and wash report come from Yikes.
Do you wash vans and larger vehicles?
Yes. Vans and larger vehicles cost a little more because they take longer, and the booking page prices it for you. For several vehicles at once, see our fleet page.
