Exterior car detailing in Medway

There is a point where a wash stops helping. The paint feels rough under a fingertip after the rinse, the wheels have a brown shadow that no brush shifts, there are tar flecks along the sills from the summer's resurfacing on the A2, and the gloss has gone grey. That is the point for an exterior detail, and Yikes does it on your own drive anywhere in Medway, from Strood to Rainham and up onto the Hoo Peninsula, through a vetted local washer from the Yikes Network who brings the water, the power, the clay and the wax. Book a window and watch the paint come back in the photos.

What is on a Medway car

Chalk, tar, salt and iron

Four things bond to paint in Medway, and a wash removes none of them. Chalk dust from the Downs settles as a film that feels like fine sandpaper. Tar from the A2, the A228 and every resurfaced estate road flicks onto the sills and the lower doors in summer and sets hard. Salt, from the estuary air all year and from the gritters between mid October and mid April, dulls the clear coat and etches where droppings have sat. And iron, the brake dust of the M2 and the Medway Tunnel, embeds itself in the paint and the wheels as tiny orange specks that turn to rust streaks. Run a hand over a bonnet in Gillingham after a rinse and you will feel all four.

The Exterior Detail takes them off in order. A proper wash first, then a chemical decontamination that dissolves the iron and the tar, then a clay treatment that lifts what is left out of the clear coat until the paint is smooth again, then a spray wax that gives the gloss back and buys a few months of protection. The wheels get the deep clean, inside the spokes and the arches, the exterior plastics are restored from grey to black, and the windscreen is compounded and protected so the wipers stop juddering. It is the job that makes a five year old car look sold.

On the drive, in a morning

It takes two to three hours on a family car and needs nothing from you but the drive and a dry day. In the terraces of Chatham and the flats at Chatham Maritime the kerb or the bay works if there is room to walk around the car; your washer parks their own vehicle and the only one that needs to be legally parked is yours.

When to book it

April, September and before you sell

Two moments in the Medway year ask for an exterior detail. The first is April, when the gritters stop and a winter of salt, iron and tar has bonded to the paint; a detail then starts the summer with smooth, protected paint that the next six months of sap and dust cannot grip as easily. The second is September, after the summer of chalk dust, tree sap and the beach at Allhallows, and before the salt returns. A detail in the autumn is also the right preparation for a ceramic coating: the correction is lighter when the decontamination has already been done.

The third moment is the week before a car is sold or photographed. A detailed car in the pictures sells for more than a washed one, and the before and after photos in your wash report are the proof a buyer wants to see. Rochester's festival weekends and the Dickensian Christmas on 5 and 6 December are the days to leave the car at home and let it be detailed rather than drive into town.

How it works

How a wash works in Medway and North Kent

  1. Book onlinePick your clean and a two-hour arrival window between 10am and 6pm, up to four weeks ahead. Same prices as the rest of London.
  2. A local washer takes itA vetted washer from the Yikes Network who works your patch. They bring water, power and kit, and sort their own parking.
  3. Before and after photosYour washer checks in at the car and photographs it before and after, so you have a record without being there.
  4. Your wash reportA text the moment it is done, with the photos, your receipt and a link to rate the wash or book the next one.

Medway cars, and the detail each one needs

Medway runs to 1.35 cars a household and 40 percent of households have two or more, and the detail work here splits by where the car lives. Cars on open drives in Rainham, Hempstead and Walderslade take the chalk and the sap; cars on the peninsula and at St Mary's Island take the salt and the gulls; cars that commute the M2 take the iron and the tar. The Local Plan's 26,176 homes by 2041 add a fourth: site dust on anything parked near a new estate, from Hoo to Rochester Riverside.

  • Paint that feels rough after a wash: Exterior Detail, the decontamination and clay are what fix it.
  • Brown wheels that no brush shifts: Exterior Detail, the iron remover does what scrubbing cannot.
  • A car worth keeping for years: Exterior Detail now, Ceramic Coating after, two years of protection.
  • A car kept clean every few weeks: Deluxe Exterior, the premium wash with the protective finish.
  • A car going on sale: Exterior Detail the week before the photos.

What's happening in Medway

Updated 25 October 2026

  • Medway's gritting season has started and runs to mid April. An exterior detail now takes the summer's tar and chalk off before the salt bonds on top of it. (Medway Council: gritting icy roads)
  • The clocks went back on Sunday 25 October. A detail takes two to three hours, so take the 10am window to finish in daylight. (GOV.UK: when the clocks change)
  • The Historic Dockyard's winter events bring traffic to Dock Road and Chatham Maritime; a car detailed at home on a quiet weekday is the easier plan. (The Historic Dockyard Chatham: events)

Medway questions

Good to know

What does an exterior detail do that a wash does not?
A wash takes off what sits on the paint. A detail takes off what has bonded to it: iron from brake dust, tar, chalk and the salt film, with a chemical decontamination and a clay treatment, then protects the smooth paint with wax.
How do I know my car needs one?
Run a fingertip over the bonnet after a wash. If it feels rough or gritty, there is bonded contamination that only a detail will lift.
Can you do it on my drive in Medway?
Yes, on any drive, or at the kerb or in a bay if there is room to walk around the car. Your washer brings water and power and needs a dry day.
Should I have a detail or a ceramic coating?
A detail is the right call for paint that is tired or for a car you will keep a year or two. A coating is the step beyond it, for a car worth protecting for two years; the detail's decontamination is part of the preparation either way.
How long does the wax last?
A few months, depending on the weather and how often the car is washed. Through a Medway winter, expect to top it up in spring.
Is it the same price as in London?
Yes. Medway bookings are on the same page at the same prices, and Members Club takes 20 percent off.
Do you need my water or electricity?
No. Your washer brings water, power and all the kit, so there is nothing to connect or set up. A flat, a terrace, a drive or a village street all work.
Do I need to be in?
Not for an outside only wash, as long as the car is where you said it would be and the washer can reach it. For anything that includes the inside, someone needs to unlock the car.
Who will wash my car?
In Medway and North Kent your wash is done by a vetted local washer from the Yikes Network. You book and pay through Yikes at the usual prices, the washer checks in at the car and takes before and after photos, and your receipt and wash report come from Yikes.
Do you wash vans and larger vehicles?
Yes. Vans and larger vehicles cost a little more because they take longer, and the booking page prices it for you. For several vehicles at once, see our fleet page.
