Yes, Yikes Car Wash now covers Rainham, the easternmost of Medway's five towns. We clean cars where they are parked across ME8: the streets off the A2 and the station, the Parkwood estate on the slope above, Rainham Mark towards Gillingham, and Lower Rainham down by the river. Book online, pick a two hour window, and a vetted local washer from the Yikes Network arrives with water, power and kit. Your car stays on the drive.

Parking reality
Rainham was a village of 422 people in 1801 and a town of well over thirty thousand two centuries later, and most of that growth came after the railway in 1858 and the electrification of the Chatham main line in 1959. The Park Wood estate to the south was built mainly in the 1960s and 1970s, and it is drives, closes and garages, as is most of Rainham Mark and the roads off Maidstone Road. That is the easiest wash there is: the car is on your own drive, nobody has to move anything, and if you have two cars your washer does both in one visit.
The older centre along the High Street, Station Road and Macklands is tighter, with Victorian terraces where the car lives on the street and a space outside your own door matters. Medway Council sells resident permits only inside its controlled parking zones, shown on an address map; if your street is one, your washer sorts their own parking and the only vehicle that has to be legally parked is yours. Commuters who leave the car at Rainham station all day get the same service at the weekend, on the drive.
The council has published a 52 page regeneration plan for the town centre with 39 possible interventions, following a feasibility study and a 2025 survey in which residents asked for a wider range of shops, markets, pop up events and more planting. It has promised several improvements by 31 March 2027 but had not said which when asked. Separately, a junction improvement at the A2 High Street and Mierscourt Road was contracted to Marlborough Highways to start in the summer holidays. Roadworks on the A2 mean slower journeys through the centre and dust on cars parked nearby.
What Rainham does to a car
Three roads cross the town. The M2 runs along its southern edge two miles from the centre, the A2 follows Watling Street through the middle, and the Lower Rainham Road runs close to the Medway's south bank. Cars that commute on the first two collect brake dust and traffic film; cars parked towards the river at Lower Rainham and Motney Hill get the damp, salt tinged air of the estuary and the birds that come with Riverside Country Park. The slope up to Parkwood is lined with trees that drop leaves in autumn and sap in summer.
None of it is a problem if it is washed off every few weeks. Left for months, salt film dulls paint, droppings etch it and dust scratches when it is wiped dry. Your washer rinses before anything touches the car, and the before and after photos arrive on your phone when the job is done.
How it works
Local life
Rainham was absorbed into Gillingham in 1929 and became one of Medway's five towns in 1998, and it still has the shape of a village that grew along a road. These are the places that shape a week here.
The council's country park on the Lower Rainham Road runs along the Medway shore to Motney Hill, with saltmarsh, mudflats and the birds of the estuary a few minutes from the town.
On the other side of town, 114 hectares of valley between Hempstead and Walderslade, opened as a country park in 1984 and run by Medway Council.
The shopping centre up the hill has more than 50 stores and free parking for up to six hours, so plenty of Rainham's shopping happens there rather than in the precinct.
Next to the station, the Oast Community Centre is an oast house turned community venue run by the Rainham and Wigmore Community Association, and Rainham is also home to the first ever oast house theatre, where the Rainham Theatrical Society performs.

Macklands is the older part of the town to the north, named for the Grade II listed Macklands Manor House, home to the Mackay printing family whose Chatham works is now part of CPi Books.

The parish church of St Margaret stands on the A2 in the middle of the old village, with the Roman Catholic church of St Thomas of Canterbury nearby.

The 2021 Census counts 12,400 people in Rainham Central, 9,200 in Rainham North and 13,600 in Rainham South. This is drive and garage country: 87 percent of households in Rainham Central and 88 percent in Rainham South have a car, and half have two or more. Rainham Central is the most owner occupied part of Medway at 85 percent, and fewer than one home in ten in the town is a flat. Medway as a whole runs at 81 percent of households with a car and 40 percent with two or more.
