Key facts

Rochester at a glance

Parking reality

Permit zones, a medieval street plan and a space you do not want to lose

Rochester's streets were laid out by the river, Watling Street, the priory and the castle, and they have not got any wider since. The lanes off the High Street and the Victorian terraces of Troy Town and The Delce were built long before cars, so parking is tight and much of the centre sits inside Medway Council's controlled parking zones. The council only sells resident permits inside those zones, one zone per permit, valid for a year, and it shows the boundaries on an address map on its website. A 2016 council briefing lists a zone R1 in Rochester East ward among the areas reviewed, and the resident permit terms limit R1 permits to one per household.

What that means for a wash is simple. Driving to a car wash from a zone street means coming back to find your space gone. We come to the car instead, and your washer sorts their own parking, so the only vehicle that has to be legally parked is yours. If you are on a drive in Borstal or Horsted, or in an allocated bay at one of the newer riverside blocks, it is simpler still: the car does not move at all.

The town centre on a busy day

Rochester fills up for its festivals and its Saturdays, and the council points visitors at pay and display car parks a short walk from the High Street, as it did for its Local Plan drop in at the Corn Exchange on Northgate. On those days the last thing you want to do is drive out and back in. Book a window, leave the car where it is, and come home to it clean.

What Rochester does to a car

River air, hill roads and the A2

Rochester is the lowest bridging point on the Medway, about 30 miles from London, and the river shapes the weather on the paint. Cars parked along the Esplanade and the riverside blocks pick up damp, salt tinged air and the bird droppings that come with gulls and a castle full of jackdaws; both etch into a clear coat if they are left. Up the hill, Borstal and Horsted sit against the North Downs, with leaf fall from the tree lined streets in autumn and sap through the summer. The A2 and the M2 slip roads add the usual film of brake dust and grime to anything that commutes.

None of that is unusual. The point is not to leave it on for months. An outside wash every few weeks lifts the salt film and the droppings before they mark, and for a newer car a ceramic coating puts a hard layer between the paint and all of it. Your washer photographs the car before and after, so you can see the difference without being there.

Local life

Rochester, the place we are washing in

Rochester was a city from 1211 to 1998 and still carries itself like one. These are the places and dates that shape a week here.

The castle and the cathedral

Rochester Castle, built by Bishop Gundulf and besieged by King John in 1215, has one of the best preserved keeps in England or France. The cathedral was founded in 604, making the diocese the second oldest in England, and The King's School, founded the same year, is recognised as the second oldest continuously running school in the world.

Dickens country

Charles Dickens owned Gads Hill Place at Higham and set much of his work in and around Rochester. The free Dickensian Christmas Festival draws around 70,000 people over its weekend; in 2025 it ran on 6 and 7 December.

The Sweeps Festival

Medway's international celebration of folk traditions, music and dance returns to historic Rochester each spring, with morris sides along the High Street and bands in the pubs. The council publishes each year's dates on its news page.

Beating the bounds

The Guild of Free Fishers and Dredgers still convenes at the Admiralty Court, and the ceremonial Beating of the Bounds on the Medway usually follows on the first Saturday of July.

The forts

Two rings of fortresses surround the Medway Towns: Fort Clarence and Fort Pitt from the Napoleonic Wars, and the 1860s Palmerston forts including Fort Borstal above the town.

Short Brothers

The Short Brothers built the first aircraft to launch a torpedo at their seaplane works on the river near the castle, and went on to build the Sunderland and Stirling here.

Who lives here, and the clean that suits

The 2011 Census counted 62,982 people in Rochester. In the 2021 Census the three Rochester wards tell three different stories. Rochester West, the historic centre and the riverside, has 11,000 people, 37 percent of its homes are flats and 81 percent of households have a car. Rochester East, the terraces towards Chatham, has 10,700 people, 19 percent flats and 75 percent of households with a car. Rochester South and Horsted, the drives and closes up the hill, has 13,600 people, fewer than one in ten homes a flat, 85 percent of households with a car and 45 percent with two or more.

  • A flat with an allocated bay by the river: Essential Exterior every few weeks keeps the salt film and the gulls at bay.
  • A terrace on a permit street: Deluxe Inside & Out, done at the kerb, and your space stays yours.
  • Two cars on a Horsted drive: book both and your washer does them in one visit.
  • A car that lives on the Esplanade: a ceramic coating is the long term answer to river air.

More on this: how a wash works on a permit street and why bird droppings and sap damage paint.

Rochester questions

Good to know

Do you cover all of Rochester?
Yes: the town centre and the Esplanade, Troy Town, The Delce, Borstal, Horsted and Rochester East, in ME1 and the Rochester end of ME2. Put your postcode into the booking page and it will show the windows available.
My street is in a controlled parking zone. Is that a problem?
No. Your washer sorts their own parking, so there is nothing for you to arrange. As long as your own car is legally parked where it is, we come to it.
Can you wash a car in an allocated bay under a riverside block?
Yes, as long as the washer can get to the bay. If it is behind a gate or a barrier, add the access details in the notes when you book.
Does river air really harm paint?
Over time, yes. Damp, salt tinged air dulls a clear coat, and bird droppings from the river etch it within days in warm weather. A regular outside wash keeps both off; a ceramic coating stops them gripping.
Can you come on a festival weekend?
Yes, but the centre is slow to get around on Sweeps and Dickensian weekends, so if your car is in the middle of town a weekday window is the easier choice.
Do you need my water or electricity?
No. Your washer brings water, power and all the kit, so there is nothing to connect or set up. A flat, a terrace, a drive or a village street all work.
Do I need to be in?
Not for an outside only wash, as long as the car is where you said it would be and the washer can reach it. For anything that includes the inside, someone needs to unlock the car.
Who will wash my car?
In Medway and North Kent your wash is done by a vetted local washer from the Yikes Network. You book and pay through Yikes at the usual prices, the washer checks in at the car and takes before and after photos, and your receipt and wash report come from Yikes.
Do you wash vans and larger vehicles?
Yes. Vans and larger vehicles cost a little more because they take longer, and the booking page prices it for you. For several vehicles at once, see our fleet page.
