Ceramic coating across Medway and North Kent

North Kent sits between two estuaries and under three motorways, which is about the hardest place in the south east to keep paint looking new. A ceramic coating is the answer with a two year horizon: a full correction first, then a hard, glass like layer bonded to the paint that salt, chalk dust and motorway film slide off at the next wash. Yikes applies it on your own drive anywhere from Dartford and Gravesend to Sittingbourne, Maidstone and the Medway towns, through a vetted local washer from the Yikes Network, in a half day booking with the photos and the receipt sent when it cures.

Why it matters here

Two estuaries, three motorways and a quarry full of chalk

Draw a line from Dartford to Sheerness and almost everything on it faces salt water: the Thames from Greenhithe to Gravesend and along the Hoo Peninsula, the Medway from Rochester to Sheppey, the Swale beyond. The air that comes off them leaves a fine salt film on every car parked within a few miles, and it dulls a clear coat the way a winter dulls brass. Then the roads: the M25 and the Dartford Crossing, the M2 and the A2 through Medway, the M20 past Maidstone, each depositing brake dust and tyre particles as an oily film that bonds to paint. And the chalk, which North Kent is made of, from the quarry Bluewater was built in to the Downs above Maidstone, leaving a fine white dust in a dry spell that scratches if it is wiped off dry.

A ceramic coating does not stop any of that landing. It stops it gripping. The paint is corrected first, the swirls and the etching polished out, and the coating cures to a surface the salt, the film and the dust sit on rather than in. The next wash, with a rinse first, takes them off; water beads and runs rather than drying in spots; the gloss stays for two years rather than two weeks. For a car that lives on an open drive facing the Thames at Greenhithe or the Medway at Strood, it is the difference between paint that ages and paint that does not.

Where it is done

On the drive, in a half day, with water and power your washer brings. A dry day is the only condition, because the coating needs a few hours to cure before it meets rain. Allocated bays and quiet kerbside spaces work if there is room to walk around the car.

When to book it

Before the gritters, after the summer, or when the car is new

Kent's primary gritting routes cover every A and B road and about 30 percent of the county's roads, and the season has run from late October to mid April in recent years. The best time to coat is the fortnight before it starts, so the paint goes into the salt protected, or the first dry spell after it ends, when the correction takes a winter off and the coating starts the summer clean. The other moment is delivery day: a new car coated before its first winter on the A2 keeps its showroom paint for the length of a lease, and goes back without a paint charge.

For an older car, be honest about the paint. A full correction takes out swirls and light etching, and the coating locks in the result, but a decade of neglect wants the Exterior Detail first, with its decontamination, clay and wax, and the coating only if the paint comes up well. Your washer will say so in the photos.

Which North Kent cars get coated

The cars that get coated across the region are the ones with the most to lose. Ebbsfleet Garden City has passed 5,000 completed homes between Dartford and Gravesend on its way to 15,000, and each comes with a newer car on a new drive in the open. The Lower Thames Crossing began early construction in March 2026 and will bring years of site traffic and dust to the A2 and A226 around Gravesend and Shorne. Medway's 111,458 households run 1.35 cars each, many of them facing the river. And every commuter who pays the £3.50 Dart Charge twice a day is driving through the M25's brake dust to earn it.

  • A new car on an Ebbsfleet or Castle Hill drive: coat it before the first winter and every wash afterwards is quicker.
  • A car facing the Thames or the Medway at Greenhithe, Gravesend, Strood or Hoo: the coating is the only thing that stops salt air gripping.
  • A Dartford Crossing commuter: motorway film rinses off a coated car instead of bonding to it.
  • A car parked near the Crossing works at Shorne or Chalk: site dust comes off at the next wash.
  • An older car with swirls: Exterior Detail first, coating after, if the paint deserves it.

What's happening across North Kent

Updated 25 October 2026

  • Kent's gritters have been on standby since October. A coating applied now goes into the salt season protected; a wash every few weeks keeps the salt from sitting. (Kent County Council: gritting routes)
  • The clocks went back on Sunday 25 October. A coating is a half day, so take the 10am window and it is finished and curing before the light goes. (GOV.UK: when the clocks change)
  • Early works on the Lower Thames Crossing have been under way since March 2026 around Gravesend and Shorne; cars parked nearby collect site dust that a coated finish sheds at the next wash. (Wikipedia: Lower Thames Crossing)

Medway and North Kent questions

Good to know

Can a ceramic coating be applied on a drive in Gravesend or Dartford?
Yes, anywhere a Network washer covers, which the booking page checks when you type the postcode. Your washer brings water and power and needs a dry day and room to walk around the car.
How long does it last by the Thames?
Two years, with the estuary air and the road salt included. Wash every few weeks and do not let droppings sit; the coating resists them but is not armour.
Does motorway film really bond to paint?
Yes. Brake dust and tyre particles from the M25, M2 and M20 settle as an oily film that a wash alone does not shift. On a coated car it rinses off.
Is it worth coating a three year old lease car?
If it is going back at the end of the term, a coating now means it goes back with its paint as it left the showroom, which is cheaper than the alternative.
What if it rains on the day?
We rebook. The coating needs a few hours to cure before it meets water, so your washer moves the job to the next dry window.
Is it the same price as in London?
Yes. North Kent bookings are on the same page at the same prices, and Members Club takes 20 percent off.
Do you need my water or electricity?
No. Your washer brings water, power and all the kit, so there is nothing to connect or set up. A flat, a terrace, a drive or a village street all work.
Do I need to be in?
Not for an outside only wash, as long as the car is where you said it would be and the washer can reach it. For anything that includes the inside, someone needs to unlock the car.
Who will wash my car?
In Medway and North Kent your wash is done by a vetted local washer from the Yikes Network. You book and pay through Yikes at the usual prices, the washer checks in at the car and takes before and after photos, and your receipt and wash report come from Yikes.
Do you wash vans and larger vehicles?
Yes. Vans and larger vehicles cost a little more because they take longer, and the booking page prices it for you. For several vehicles at once, see our fleet page.
