Exterior car detailing across Medway and North Kent

Run a fingertip over a bonnet in Dartford after a wash and it feels like fine sandpaper. That roughness is the point of an exterior detail: it is contamination bonded into the clear coat, and North Kent produces more of it than most places, from the chalk the county stands on, the tar of three motorways, the iron of the Crossing's lorries and the cement of its building sites. The Exterior Detail lifts it with a decontamination and a clay, then waxes the smooth paint. The Medway towns have their own page; this one covers Gravesend to Sevenoaks, done on the drive through vetted local washers from the Yikes Network.

Town by town

What is bonded to the paint in each part of North Kent

Gravesend, Northfleet and Shorne

Cement. Early works on the Lower Thames Crossing have run since March 2026 between Gravesend and the tunnel's southern end, and a car parked within a mile of them gathers a grey film that is alkaline, abrasive and impossible to wipe off without scratching. The Thames at the Town Pier adds the salt. The detail's decontamination dissolves the cement film and the clay lifts what is left; the wax afterwards means next month's dust rinses off.

Dartford, Greenhithe and the Crossing

Iron. The M25 and the Dartford Crossing carry lorries all day, and their brake dust lands on paint as specks of iron that rust into orange streaks and on alloys as a brown shadow no brush shifts. The iron remover turns purple as it works, which is the most satisfying part of any detail, and the wheels come out silver. Bluewater's quarry adds chalk; the tar from the A2's resurfacing adds the sills.

Ebbsfleet and Longfield

Site dust. Ebbsfleet Garden City is past 5,000 homes and building, and the young cars on its drives have paint that was new last year and feels like 120 grit now. An Exterior Detail in spring and again in autumn keeps them smooth, and is the right preparation for a ceramic coating on a car worth keeping.

Sittingbourne and Sheppey

Salt and sand. Both estuaries, the Swale and the Medway, and the gritters on the A2 and the A249 for six months. The decontamination lifts the salt film the clear coat has been carrying since October, and the windscreen compound takes off the smear that makes night driving on the A249 so tiring.

Maidstone, the Malling villages and the Downs

Sap and chalk. The Kent Downs National Landscape covers a quarter of the county, and a car parked under its trees carries sap that has hardened into lacquer and chalk from the lanes that has worked into it. The clay is what lifts both; the restored plastics and the wax are what make a five year old car look sold.

How it works here

A dry morning, a drive and your washer's own water

Type your postcode into the booking page and it checks whether a Network washer covers it; pick the Exterior Detail and a window, and take the 10am one now that the clocks have gone back, because the job runs two to three hours on a family car. A drive is ideal, a kerbside space or an allocated bay works if there is room to walk around the car, and the only condition is a dry day. Your washer brings water and power, works through the wash, the decontamination, the clay, the wheels, the plastics, the windscreen and the wax, and sends the before and after photographs with the receipt.

Kent's gritters cover every A and B road from late October to mid April, which gives the detail its two seasons: April, when a winter of salt, iron and tar has bonded to the paint and needs lifting before the summer; and September, when the summer's sap, chalk and site dust come off before the salt returns. For a car worth keeping for years, the September detail is the preparation for a ceramic coating; for a car going on sale, the detail the week before the photographs is the cheapest thing you will do to its price.

What's happening across North Kent

Updated 25 October 2026

  • Early works on the Lower Thames Crossing have run since March 2026 around Gravesend and Shorne, with opening expected in the early 2030s. Cement dust on nearby cars needs a decontamination, not a cloth. (Wikipedia: Lower Thames Crossing)
  • The clocks went back on Sunday 25 October. A detail runs two to three hours; the 10am window finishes in daylight. (GOV.UK: when the clocks change)
  • Kent's gritters are on standby. A detail now takes the summer's sap, chalk and tar off before the salt bonds on top of it. (Kent County Council: gritting routes)

Medway and North Kent questions

Good to know

Do you cover Gravesend, Dartford, Sittingbourne and Maidstone for detailing?
Yes, and Ebbsfleet, Longfield, the Malling villages and Sevenoaks, wherever a Network washer covers the postcode. The Medway towns have their own page.
Can you lift the cement film from the Crossing works?
Yes. It needs the chemical decontamination and the clay; wiping it off dry scratches the paint. Book the Exterior Detail, not a wash.
My wheels are brown and no brush shifts it. Is that fixable?
Yes. It is iron from brake dust bonded to the alloy, and the iron remover in the Exterior Detail dissolves it; the wheels come out silver.
Does it need a dry day?
Yes, for the wax to cure. If rain is forecast your washer will move the booking to the next dry window rather than risk it.
Detail or ceramic coating?
The detail for tired paint or a car you will keep a year or two; the coating for a car worth protecting for two years. The detail's decontamination is part of the coating's preparation either way.
Is it the same price in Sevenoaks as in London?
Yes. One booking page, one set of prices, and Members Club takes 20 percent off.
Do you need my water or electricity?
No. Your washer brings water, power and all the kit, so there is nothing to connect or set up. A flat, a terrace, a drive or a village street all work.
Do I need to be in?
Not for an outside only wash, as long as the car is where you said it would be and the washer can reach it. For anything that includes the inside, someone needs to unlock the car.
Who will wash my car?
In Medway and North Kent your wash is done by a vetted local washer from the Yikes Network. You book and pay through Yikes at the usual prices, the washer checks in at the car and takes before and after photos, and your receipt and wash report come from Yikes.
Do you wash vans and larger vehicles?
Yes. Vans and larger vehicles cost a little more because they take longer, and the booking page prices it for you. For several vehicles at once, see our fleet page.
