Ceramic coating in Stevenage

A ceramic coating is the one thing you can do to a car in Stevenage that makes the maples lose. Honeydew, the sticky film the town's Norway maple avenues drop every summer, bonds to bare clear coat and etches it if it is left; on a coated car it sits on top and rinses off. The same goes for the winter salt, the A1(M) tar and the bird mess under the trees at Fairlands Valley. Yikes does the full job on your drive: the paint corrected first, then the two year coating applied and cured, by a vetted local washer from the Yikes Network who brings water, power, lighting and the day it takes.

Why coat a car here

Honeydew, salt and a town that parks under trees

The New Town's planners planted Norway maples along almost every road and in every court, and eighty years on they are enormous. From June the aphids in them drip honeydew, a sugar film that dries clear, collects dust, and in a hot week etches a faint ring into unprotected lacquer that polishing will not fully remove. A ceramic coating is a hard, slick layer over the clear coat: the honeydew sits on it, a wash lifts it, and the lacquer underneath never meets it. The same slickness means the winter's road salt, which Hertfordshire lays on the A602, Fairlands Way and every bus route from October to April, rinses off rather than bonding.

Correction first, every time

A coating locks in whatever is under it, so the paint is corrected before it goes on: a decontamination wash, an iron remover for the brake dust from the A1(M), a clay to lift the honeydew rings and the tar, then machine polishing to take out the swirls that a few years of brush washes leave. On a car under three years old that is a light correction; on an older car with the summer etching it is a longer one, and your washer will say so when they see the paint. The coating goes on panel by panel under lights, cures for 24 hours, and the car needs to stay dry through that night, which is why a drive or a carport beats a court bay under a maple.

Which cars in Stevenage

Chells Manor and Great Ashby are the newest parts of town, 90 percent car owning in Manor ward with a third of its homes detached, and the drives there carry the cars that suit a coating best: under three years old, on a lease or a PCP that will be settled and kept, or bought new to run for a decade. A coating on an older car is worth it only after a full correction, and the Exterior Detail is the honest first step for a car whose paint has gone dull.

When to book it

A dry day, ideally before the gritters

The coating needs a day without rain and a night without dew settling into wet product, so the easy months are April to October; in winter a dry spell is fine but the washer will move the booking rather than risk a damp cure. The best timing is September or early October, so the car goes into the salt season protected, or April, once the gritters have stopped and the honeydew has not started. A car bought in the summer gets coated before its first winter on the A1(M).

Once it is on, the care is simple: a wash every few weeks with a pH neutral soap, no brush washes and no harsh traffic film remover, and a quick rinse after a week under a maple rather than a month. The Deluxe Exterior and the Essential Exterior on the booking page are both coating safe, and a two year coating that is washed properly lasts the two years. Station Gateway work began on the Oval on 30 January 2026, and a coated car parked anywhere near the works is the one that shrugs off the dust.

The coatings we do in Stevenage

  • A new car on a Great Ashby drive: light correction and the two year coating before its first winter.
  • A three year old PCP car in Chells Manor that is being kept: full correction for the honeydew etching, then the coating.
  • An EV on a Symonds Green drive: coating, because black and dark grey paint shows every maple ring.
  • A car with dull paint in the Old Town: Exterior Detail first; coating later if the correction brings it back.
  • A coated car, two years on: a fresh correction and coating, lighter this time because the paint has been protected.

Stevenage questions

Good to know

Does the coating need a drive, or will a garage court do?
A drive, a carport or a private bay with room to walk round the car and no tree directly overhead. A court bay under a maple is a poor place to cure a coating, because the honeydew and the dew land on it overnight.
Can it be done in winter?
Yes, in a dry spell of two days. Rain or heavy dew during the cure spoils it, so your washer will move the booking rather than risk it.
Is a coating worth it on a lease car?
If you will settle and keep it, yes. If it goes back in a year, the Exterior Detail does the paint justice for a fraction of the price.
Will it stop the maple honeydew?
It will stop it bonding. The film still lands, but it sits on the coating and rinses off, and the lacquer underneath never etches.
How do I wash a coated car?
Every few weeks with a pH neutral soap and a proper two bucket wash, never a brush wash. The Deluxe Exterior and the Essential Exterior on our booking page are both coating safe.
Is it the same price as in London?
Yes. One booking page, one set of prices, and Members Club takes 20 percent off the maintenance washes afterwards.
Do you need my water or electricity?
No. Your washer brings water, power and all the kit, so there is nothing to connect or set up. A flat, a terrace, a drive or a village street all work.
Do I need to be in?
Not for an outside only wash, as long as the car is where you said it would be and the washer can reach it. For anything that includes the inside, someone needs to unlock the car.
Who will wash my car?
In Hertfordshire your wash is done by a vetted local washer from the Yikes Network. You book and pay through Yikes at the usual prices, the washer checks in at the car and takes before and after photos, and your receipt and wash report come from Yikes.
Do you wash vans and larger vehicles?
Yes. Vans and larger vehicles cost a little more because they take longer, and the booking page prices it for you. For several vehicles at once, see our fleet page.
