Areas we cover
Lewisham is really a dozen places stitched together, and each one parks differently. Here is how a wash that comes to you fits each of them.
Deptford High Street is market street first and road second: on market days, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, the council closes it to traffic from 6am to 7pm. The zones around it, Deptford (DP), Deptford South (DS) and Evelyn (EN), run Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Up the hill in New Cross, Goldsmiths has its main site on Lewisham Way, with limited parking on campus and none for the public.
Brockley's conservation area was designated in 1973 and was built up mostly in the 1870s and 1880s, with its grandest villas on Wickham Road, Breakspears Road, Tressillian Road and Tyrwhitt Road. The council has approved new controls for Harcourt, Harefield, Geoffrey and Foxberry Roads. Next door, Ladywell Fields follows the River Ravensbourne, and Hilly Fields looks out over the whole borough from about 175 feet up.
The town centre has the borough's busiest zones. Since an October 2025 traffic order, Lewisham Central is split into B1, Monday to Saturday from 9am to 7pm, and B2, which adds Sunday mornings from 9am to 1.30pm. Lewisham Gateway by the station has brought hundreds of new homes. To the east, the Lewisham and Lee Green low traffic neighbourhood uses cameras rather than barriers, letting Lewisham Blue Badge holders and emergency vehicles through, so your washer plans a route in rather than a short cut through.
The south of the borough is greener and hillier. Catford has the Broadway Theatre and Blythe Hill Fields, with views to Canary Wharf; Forest Hill has the Horniman; and Honor Oak sits mostly in Lewisham with part in Southwark. Sydenham Hill Wood, just over the line in Southwark, is the largest surviving piece of the ancient Great North Wood. If you have a drive, we are just as happy washing on it.
First things first: you do not need to buy a visitor permit for us. Your washer sorts their own parking, so the only car that needs to be legally parked is yours.
Even so, Lewisham's zones are worth knowing, because they vary so much. Rushey Green West (E) in Catford runs Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm. Hindsley Place (C) runs Monday to Saturday, 8am to 6.30pm. Grove Park (D) is weekdays to 5.30pm, and Murillo Road (F) weekdays to 7pm. The council says the exact days and hours are on the signs where you enter each zone, and double yellow lines apply at all times.
The map is also changing. Lewisham's Sustainable Streets programme, approved in December 2022, reviews parking street by street, and a 2025 consultation covered Bellingham, Catford South, Deptford, Forest Hill and New Cross Gate; the council says new zones only go in where there is strong local support. If friends or family visit, Lewisham's visitor permits are mostly paperless e-permits tied to the visiting car's registration, and households with an annual resident permit get some free visitor credit.
How it works
Local life
Lewisham is full of markets, festivals and hill-top parks. These are the ones locals plan their weekends around.
Council-run, on Deptford High Street every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 9am to 5.30pm. Trading here goes back to 1872, when it began as a market for foreign cattle and sheep.
Every Saturday from 10am to 2pm in the Lewisham College car park on Lewisham Way. Book an early window and come back to a clean car.

Opened in 1896 after a campaign Octavia Hill helped lead. It has a millennium stone circle, a 9am Saturday parkrun with two hills a lap, and a Friends group that runs dawn chorus walks and an orchard wassail.
Free to visit at 100 London Road, Forest Hill, with the gardens open daily until sunset and the Horniman Market every Sunday from 10am to 3pm.
Catford's Broadway Theatre opened in 1932 and reopened in 2023 after a £7 million refurbishment. Outside the Catford Centre, the fibreglass Catford Cat has kept watch since 1974.
The local arts festival marked 25 years in 2026, running from late May to early June and finishing with a family day on Hilly Fields.
The 2021 Census counted 300,553 people in Lewisham, and it is a young borough, with about 70,600 residents under 20. It is a mixed borough too: White British is the largest single group at 37 percent, alongside large Black African, Other White and Black Caribbean communities. Housing ranges from Brockley's Victorian villas, a good number of them council-owned since wartime requisitioning and later purchases, to new homes at Lewisham Gateway.
